Sweco wins EUR 3.3 million light rail project in Finland
Sweco is part of an alliance that has been contracted to provide design services in a project for expanding the light rail system in the City of Tampere in Finland. The value of Sweco’s part of the project is EUR 3.3 million.
The tram system plays an important role in the City of Tampere’s efforts to reduce traffic emissions and thereby become carbon-neutral by 2030. Some 50 Sweco consultants will be engaged in the project and provide design services for street, traffic, bridge, light rail, electricity and technology systems, for permit and environmental advice, and for information and risk management, for example. The clients are Tampere Tramway, the City of Tampere and the Municipality of Pirkkala.
“Sweco has participated in the previous stages of the Tampere Tramway and we are proud to also contribute our expertise in this phase, when 13.6 kilometres of new light rail lines will be developed. With expertise in technology, architecture and environmental services, Sweco is well-positioned to advise on efficient transport systems as a key factor in sustainable urban development,” says Thomas Hietto, President of Sweco Finland.
The City of Tampere is growing rapidly and is investing in the new tramway to achieve an environmentally sustainable increase in public transport capacity. The current light rail system started operating in 2021, with around 10 million journeys during its first year and with excellent passenger satisfaction rates. The project starts immediately and will continue until late 2024.
The alliance consists of Sweco, YIT, AFRY and NRC Group.
