Sleep Cycle Offers Cough Radar as a Free Feature to Help People Stay Healthy This Winter
With the winter illness season now affecting millions globally, Sleep Cycle, the leading sleep technology company, is living out its mission to improve public health by offering its premium Cough Radar feature for free from December 9, 2024 through February 2025. Cough Radar, now celebrating its one year anniversary, is an AI-driven tool that analyzes coughing trends on an individual level and at the community-level via an interactive map.
Cough Radar’s advanced algorithms analyze sound during sleep to detect coughing events and their frequency – indicating whether coughing levels are normal, high, or elevated and alerting users when coughing levels are rising in their area.
“Increases in coughing first often surface during sleep. Cough Radar helps users understand the spread of respiratory-related illnesses in their area, empowering them to make informed choices. For example, if there is a large coughing cloud in the area you were planning to go shopping, you might opt to go to a less crowded center or shop online,” says Mikael Kågebäck, Ph.D. and Chief Technology Officer at Sleep Cycle.
Live Cough Tracking: For a Healthier Tomorrow
Cough Radar enhances public health by providing users with a tool to mitigate the risk of catching respiratory illnesses. These early insights enable individuals to adjust behaviors to avoid exposure, especially for immunocompromised individuals. Cough Radar, which was previously only available to premium users, will now be accessible to all iOS users during the winter months when respiratory illnesses are most widespread.
”While Cough Radar tracks cough frequency, it is important to note that it doesn’t diagnose underlying causes,” says Michael Gradisar, Ph.D. and Head of Sleep Science at Sleep Cycle. “If coughing rates are rising in your area, it’s helpful to consider the broader context. Most factors related to cough spread are within our control, and with the awareness our communities have gained in recent years, we can use data to make educated choices and reduce anxiety around illness.”
“By making Cough Radar free during this period, we aim to highlight the value of both the feature and the app to new and existing users, while also providing them with a tool to support their health and wellbeing. This initiative aligns perfectly with our strategy, as we continue to build awareness around Sleep Cycle and further expand our user base,” says Erik Jivmark, CEO of Sleep Cycle.
