Rejlers part of alliance leading the renewal of the Koskela depot in Helsinki

{newsItem.title}

Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd, responsible for the construction of a new tram depot in Koskela, Helsinki, has approved the progression of the project to its implementation phase. The alliance agreement between Rejlers, Skanska, Sweco, Sipti and APRT Architects marks the start of a continued collaboration between the parties. The tram depot project has ambitious environmental targets, aiming at significantly reducing carbon emissions and contributing to Helsinki's goal of climate neutrality by 2030.

The new Koskela tram depot will respond to the demands of rapidly increasing volumes of tram traffic and sustainable urban mobility. The new depot will have 41,000 square metres of gross floor area. Among other things, the depot will have space to store approximately 50 trams, approximately 13 daily maintenance areas, 13 maintenance bays, a lathing track, and areas to store and service the maintenance vehicles.

Rejlers will bring strong expertise in technical building services and energy design to the project and is responsible for designing the HVAC, automation, energy, electrical and sprinkler systems.

“The Koskela tram depot is essential for sustainable public transport in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and the energy solutions we design will have a significant impact on the project’s carbon emissions,” says Topi Tissari, Director of Business Operations at division Buildings in Finland.

The tram depot project aims to be a pioneer in environmental responsibility, with ambitious environmental targets for carbon emissions, the circular economy, energy solutions and environmental certification.

“We are proud to be part of this important project, where we can contribute to improving the sustainability footprint of the Koskela depot, through both increased circularity and lowered carbon emissions”, says Malin Ljung Eiborn, Sustainability Director at Rejlers.
