Nordic Iron Ore AB (NIO) is pleased to announce its participation in yet another valuable EU-funded project to improve exploration technology and knowledge of local mineral resources to NIO’s sites
The ERA-MIN 3 Project, FUTURE, will shape high-tech mineral exploration solutions through a focused European and South African partnership.
NIO, working closely with Uppsala University, Sercel, Wits University, Geological Survey of Sweden, Politecnico di Torino, South Deep Gold Mine, University of Venda via support from National Funding Agencies through an ERA-NET Cofund on Raw Materials (ERA-MIN), will collaborate together, once again, in a technology development project to expand sustainable high-tech and innovative mineral exploration solutions. The work will employ fiber-optic sensing technologies, MEMS- based seismic nodes, and UAV-based magnetic and electromagnetic surveys for high-definition target generations and subsurface imaging.
The field development work will take place at NIO’s mine sites in Sweden and Gold Field’s deep mining site in South Africa, where mining at depth requires improved understanding of potential resources at depth and their host rock structures.
Several field surveys are planned, as well as new prototype equipment and technical solutions to make these types of surveys cost-effective in hard rock settings. The project will also involve a major training and educational component, as well as providing workshops and presentations as the project progresses.
The project is planned to kick-off during April 2022 and will last for 48 months.
