Netmore strikes IoT deal in the UK – providing connectivity to 76,000 water meters for Diehl Metering and South West Water
Netmore Group has won a contract for 76,000 IoT subscriptions when smart water meters are to be connected with LoRaWAN in South West England. The deal takes place within the framework of a tender won by Netmore's partner Diehl Metering, and forms part of the water company South West Water's sustainability project Green Recovery Initiative. The duration of the contract is five years, and work on rolling out the network infrastructure will begin immediately.
South West Water chooses Diehl and Netmore - The deal in brief
Netmore Group has won a contract, as part of a procurement awarded to Diehl Metering, for providing connectivity to 76,000 smart water meters to be installed in households and commercial properties around South West England.
Netmore will build and manage the LoRaWAN network that will provide smart meters with the connectivity required to ensure reliable data collection about water consumption in the intended households and businesses. Data that can then be used for a number of purposes, where the primary goal is to enable users to gain control over their consumption, as well as to identify costly water leaks.
The deal initially runs over a five-year period and each connected meter generates a monthly income for Netmore over the entire period. The meters that are connected have an estimated lifetime considerably longer than that, which means that Netmore may accrue additional income even after the contract period has expired, in the event of a possible contract extension.
"We are happy and proud that our close and well-functioning collaboration with Diehl Metering has now resulted in a first significant deal. Netmore's strategy to deliver reliable and cost-effective LoRaWAN connectivity to large-scale socially beneficial projects in the utility sector with a focus on water is working and the deal proves that our position as an enabler of these projects is valuable to the market's various players. As part of this strategy we had recently started to roll out a national LoRaWAN network adapted for connecting smart meters in water, electricity, gas and district heating, as well as other IoT sensors, and we see great potential in the UK market.”,
says Vadim Lyu, Managing director UK, Netmore Group
"It is our great pleasure to be able to provide South West Water with the IoT solution needed to achieve the complex and ambitious goals for the Green Recovery Initiative with the support of the Netmore Group. Our partnership and collaboration with Netmore enabled us to offer an end to end “Data as a Service” solution to South West Water in North Devon, which will benefit all parties and most importantly the consumers!

Louise Newstead, South West Water’s Green Recovery Programme Manager, said:
”Our Green Recovery Initiative is focussed on the steps we are taking to support the South West region sustainably recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are pleased to be working with Netmore and Diehl Metering on the installation of smart meters which will help help our customers manage their water use and bills more easily, while allowing us to better understand where and when water is being used on our network.”
Netmore and Diehl Metering part of South West Water's project Green Recovery Initiative
The smart meters being installed form part of South West Water's Green Recovery Initiative. The initiative is based on a six-point program that affects several important parts of the water utility system in the areas around Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. In addition to the installation and commissioning of smart water meters in households and commercial properties, the focus is on, for example, improved drinking water quality and a program to alleviate the effect of floods as well as increase biodiversity and reduce the carbon footprint.

Netmore is currently rolling out LoRaWAN coverage in a growing number of countries across Europe – paving the way for large-scale IoT projects
Netmore and ECN have initiated a major expansion of LoRaWAN in Europe in 2022. It is currently rolling out LoRaWAN in Sweden, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, France and Poland. In addition, there are roaming agreements that provide coverage also in Finland and Switzerland.
The network deployment, combined with Netmore's European 'coverage guarantee' and 'coverage on demand' enables the deployment of nationwide IoT projects both within the above-mentioned countries, and in the remaining European countries. Furthermore, Netmore, ECN and Polar Structure are also to enable large-scale IoT projects of social benefit spanning several countries in Europe.
