Klimator signs agreement with Mesta A/S - Breaking new ground with AHEAD in the winter industry

{newsItem.title}

Mesta A/S will be the first pilot customer in winter maintenance in Europe to implement Klimator's product AHEAD. The order is initially worth 1.5 million SEK over a three-year period. Klimator's AHEAD technology is primarily aimed at the automotive industry, but the capabilities of the new technology contribute to the vision of a fully automated salt truck. Mesta already uses Road Status Information (RSI) as an advanced decision and follow-up system for winter maintenance and is now supplementing with AHEAD to evaluate and explore the idea of an onboard system for fully automatic and dynamic calibration of actions. The deal is based on an innovation project together with the State Road Administration in Norway (Statens Vegvesen).

The deal includes deliveries of AHEAD systems to selected salt trucks in Norway, where the system measures road conditions with laser sensors and calculates and visualizes upcoming road conditions up to 50 meters in front of the vehicle. The high ambitions are to exploit the advantages of continuously documenting the quality of the road and combine a high-resolution forecast with the road condition in real-time to enable autonomous micro-adjustment directly in the salt truck.

“The winter industry in general, and Mesta in particular, is increasingly transforming and digitizing itself and investing in new research-based technologies which challenge both old methods and ways of working. Smart winter road maintenance means substantial gains for the environment when salt/sand/fuel can be used in a more efficient way and it's especially fun to get this in place with Mesta," says Emil Danielsson, Head of Winter Maintenance.

About Mesta

Mesta is Norway's largest construction company in operation and maintenance of roads, railways and special projects aimed at tunnel clean-up, rock and avalanche protection and bridge maintenance. Mesta is today 100 percent owned by the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Norway and has both public and private customers throughout the country. Public customers are in the majority, together with The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen) and the country's regions as the largest customers. Mesta has close to 1,700 employees. The head office is in Lysaker in Bærum, but Mesta has operations, local offices and construction sites all over the country and engages local smaller and larger private contractors.

About Road Status Information

Road Status Information (RSI) is a Software-as-a-Service application for the winter maintenance industry which delivers all critical information needed to ensure safe winter roads. The data provided in RSI is created by using a combination of ruled-based algorithms, machine learning, and analysis of immense amounts of real-life road and environment data. RSI processes this data with advanced climate models to provide detailed forecasts for roads, bicycle- and footpaths. The high-resolution forecasts given in RSI are used by traffic authorities, winter road contractors and municipalities providing the best possible foundation for proactive and sustainable winter maintenance. Klimator's forecasts facilitate decisions, planning and follow-up of measures and contribute to using resources more efficiently and reducing the climate footprint.

About AHEAD

AHEAD is a technology that analyzes the road surface and friction ahead of a vehicle, in real-time. The technology is the result of over ten years of research and development within road surface classification. AHEAD provides vehicle systems with information on prevailing road surface conditions, which increases the functionality, operability, and use of advanced driver support systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) technologies.
