Fabege first to implement a full-scale reuse hub

Fabege has created a reuse hub in Solna Business Park. The reuse is scaled up by using a large physical warehouse and a digital marketplace. The aim is to create a functioning reuse market and reduce climate emissions for the property sector.

Around 2,000 square metres in the Solna Business Park are used to collect building materials, installations, equipment and furniture for reuse, with everything being documented in a digital marketplace. The reuse hub is an important cornerstone of Fabege’s reuse strategy and a prerequisite for scaling up reuse efforts and making a contribution to Fabege halving its CO2 emissions from construction projects by 2030.

- We want to, we can and we will make a difference. “The reuse hub is a catalyst that enables a greater degree of reuse in Fabege’s business operations. In the long term, we also want to open it up to other participants, like a DIY store for the property industry, but with reused materials," says Stefan Windefalk, Head of Redevelopment at Fabege.

Like at any warehouse, materials and products are lined up and labelled in order on large storage shelves. What sets this warehouse apart from others is that everything that comes here is second hand, and will be reused.

- We need to create the right conditions to enable circular material flows. This means building primarily with recycled materials and also with materials that have a high proportion of recycled or renewable content. Our goal is that at least 20 per cent of the materials used in a redevelopment project are circular,” says Mia Häggström, Head of Sustainability at Fabege.

Fabege wants to challenge the current attitude to reuse and increase the incentives to scale up reuse in the industry.

- We disseminate information about our reuse strategy and share our experiences, systems and working practices regarding reuse. There is great interest in the industry and we believe the whole sector can move forwards together. The potential of the reuse market for construction materials is huge,” concludes Stefan Windefalk.
