Sweco wins major project for design of patient-centric new hospital complex in Luxembourg

{newsItem.title}

Sweco will lead a consortium that will develop a new large-scale hospital complex in the south of Luxembourg, to be fully operational by 2033. The client is Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (CHEM) and Sweco will be responsible for managing the entire spectrum of design phases in the project.

Set to provide the population of the southern region of Luxembourg with modern healthcare, the new hospital “Südspidol” in the city of Esch-sur-Alzette is to be designed to incorporate technology, humanity, and nature in a holistic approach to healthcare. The hospital will have a gross floor area of 121,000 m² and approximately 600 beds, of which the majority are single rooms.

“Sweco is a market leader in technology consulting for the healthcare sector and we are excited to use our expertise to support CHEM in establishing the new Südspidol hospital in Luxembourg. This is an ambitious project aiming to obtain a DGNB certificate* for sustainability, and we will implement state-of-the-art energy-efficient solutions to meet that certification,” says Erwin Malcorps, Business Area President for Sweco in Belgium.

The strength of Sweco lies in a multidisciplinary approach and the pooling of knowledge across divisions and countries, in this specific project coordinating more than 50 stakeholders from different countries in five languages. Sweco will be managing the entire spectrum of design phases including advice to achieve high sustainability standards, permitting processes, tendering, budget control, construction management and commissioning.

*CHEM aims to obtain a DGNB certificate, a recognition by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen for sustainable construction projects. The DGNB system, which equally weighs ecology, economy, and sociocultural quality, offers a holistic approach to sustainability.
