SENS concludes pre-feasibility study in a large scale mine in Czech Republic, with positive outcome
Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden Holding AB ("SENS" or the "Company") today announces that it has successfully completed and delivered the pre-feasibility study for constructing and operating an underground pumped hydro storage facility, that was ordered by Diamo, a Czech mine owner
With SENS' solution with pumped hydro storage in underground mines, large-scale long duration energy storage is enabled in a cost-effective and sustainable way. One of SENS' ongoing projects is in the Rožná mine owned by Diamo.
Diamo is a state-owned company, employing approx. 2000 people, that is owning and remediating mines that are to be phased out in the Czech Republic. As such, Diamo is a very important client to SENS.
The Rožná mine is an old uranium mine in the Vysočina district in the Czech Republic. The mine was in operation between 1957 and 2017 and at its max capacity it produced about 20 % of the total Czech uranium production. The mine has 24 levels, and the total depth is 1 200 m from the surface.
SENS has during the fall carried out analysis of the mine for the purpose of investigating the possibilities for constructing a pumped hydro storage (PHS) plant in the mine. SENS performed a site visit in December to inspect the physical conditions in the mine. The results from the pre-feasibility study came out positive and suggests that the project specific properties meet the technical conditions to repurpose the Rožná mine into an underground PHS plant. The next step for the project is to initiate a more thorough feasibility study to continue the analysis and preparations for designing the PHS layout.
"We appreciate Diamo’s interest in our PHS solution and are glad to have successfully delivered a positive pre-feasibility study as a first check to continue the work of transforming the mine into an energy storage facility. The mine has been very important for the neighbouring areas employing around 5000 in the mine, 30 0000 people in total over the years. As such, we are very proud for the vote of confidence by Diamo to explore the possibilities of repurposing the mine to not only create economical and environmental values for the municipality but also social” comments Henrik Boman, CEO at SENS.
